Heat Pump Hot Water Installation Wollongong

Looking to Cut Your Hot Water Bills?
If you’re still running an old electric storage tank, a heat pump hot water system is the most cost-effective upgrade available to Illawarra homeowners right now. Running costs up to two-thirds lower than a conventional electric system, strong NSW and federal rebates to reduce the upfront cost, and a climate that suits the technology well year-round.
CS Plumbing has been installing hot water systems across Wollongong and the Illawarra since 1992. We’re licensed, we handle the rebate paperwork, and there’s no call-out fee.

How Does a Heat Pump Hot Water System Work?
A heat pump works like a refrigerator in reverse. Instead of pushing heat out to keep things cold, it pulls warmth from the surrounding air and uses it to heat your water.
A fan draws air across an evaporator containing refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, a compressor concentrates that heat to a much higher temperature, and a heat exchanger transfers it into the storage tank. The system uses electricity to run the fan and compressor — but because it’s moving existing heat rather than generating it from scratch, it typically uses around a third of the electricity a conventional electric hot water system needs for the same result.
For a household that currently spends $600–$800 a year on electric hot water, that difference is significant.
Why the Illawarra Climate Is Ideal for Heat Pumps
Heat pumps perform best in mild, moderate climates — and the Illawarra delivers exactly that for most of the year. Coastal Wollongong, Shellharbour, Dapto and Albion Park rarely see the sustained cold that forces heat pumps to work harder. Winter overnight lows along the coast typically sit between 8–12°C, well within the efficient operating range of modern units.
Compare that to homes on the Southern Tablelands or in Western Sydney, where winter mornings regularly drop below 5°C and heat pump efficiency takes a noticeable hit. In the Illawarra, you get strong year-round performance without relying heavily on a backup electric booster element through winter — and that’s where the real energy savings stack up over time.
NSW and Federal Rebates — What’s Available
ebates are the main reason heat pump installations have increased sharply across NSW in recent years. There are two schemes that apply to most Illawarra homeowners upgrading from an electric storage system.
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
Under the federal government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, heat pump hot water systems qualify for Small-scale Technology Certificates based on the electricity they’re expected to displace over their lifetime. The value of these certificates is applied as a point-of-sale discount — meaning the price you pay upfront is already reduced before you write a cheque.
The exact value depends on the model installed and your postcode zone. For most Illawarra installations, STCs typically represent a discount in the range of several hundred dollars to over $1,000. We apply this directly to your quote.
For current STC information, see the Clean Energy Regulator.
NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS)
The NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme provides additional incentives for households upgrading from an inefficient electric hot water system to a heat pump. Eligibility and discount amounts depend on your existing system and the replacement model. In some cases, the combined value of STCs and ESS incentives brings the out-of-pocket cost of a quality heat pump close to what you’d pay for a standard electric replacement.
For current ESS eligibility information, see the NSW Energy Savings Scheme.
We handle the paperwork. You don’t apply separately or chase certificates — the applicable discounts are factored into your quote from the start.
Which System Is Right for Your Household
Heat pump systems are sized primarily by tank capacity, measured in litres. Getting the size right matters: too small and the backup element runs constantly, eating into your savings; too large and you’re paying for capacity you don’t need.
As a general guide:
- 1–2 people: 160–200L
- 3–4 people: 250–315L
- 5+ people: 315L or larger
These are starting points — actual usage patterns, whether you have a pool, spa or solar panels, and your hot water draw times all affect the right choice. We assess this as part of every quote rather than defaulting to a standard size.
We’ll recommend the right unit based on your household size, available space, and budget — not based on what’s sitting on the shelf.
Switching From an Old Electric or Gas System
Most heat pump installations in Wollongong are changeovers from ageing electric storage tanks. The process is straightforward in most cases: we disconnect and remove the old unit, prepare the installation location, connect the new system to your existing hot water plumbing and electrical supply, and commission it on the day.
A few things affect how straightforward the changeover is:
- Location and airflow. Heat pumps need adequate airflow to operate efficiently — they draw air in and exhaust it. An enclosed cupboard isn’t suitable. Most are installed outdoors or in a well-ventilated garage or utility area. If your current system is in a tight internal location, we’ll discuss the options with you before quoting.
- Electrical supply. Heat pumps run on a standard 10A or 15A connection depending on the model. If your existing hot water circuit is on a controlled load (off-peak) tariff, we’ll advise whether switching to a standard tariff makes sense given your usage and the new system’s running costs.
- Switching from gas. Changing from a gas hot water system to a heat pump involves capping the existing gas connection and connecting to your electrical supply. It’s a common changeover and we handle the full job — gas and plumbing — under one licence.
Brands We Install
We install heat pump systems from established manufacturers with strong warranty support and parts availability in Australia:
- Reclaim Energy — Australian-designed, one of the most efficient units available. The heat pump and tank are separate units, giving flexibility on placement where space is a consideration.
- Sanden — Japanese-made CO₂ heat pump technology with a long track record of reliability. Performs well in cooler conditions and carries a strong warranty.
- Rheem Ambiheat — A familiar name in Australian hot water with a wide parts and service network across NSW. Solid all-round performer.
- iStore — Compact integrated unit suited to homes where space is limited. Good performance at a competitive price point.
- Chromagen — Cost-effective option with strong STC value. Well-suited to straightforward electric-to-heat-pump changeovers.
We recommend based on your household size, available space and budget — not on what’s sitting on the shelf.
What Does a Heat Pump Installation Cost in Wollongong?
We don’t publish fixed prices because the installed cost depends on the system chosen, your existing setup, and what’s involved in the changeover. What we can tell you:
- Rebates (STCs and potentially ESS) are applied directly to your quote — you see the rebate-adjusted price from the start
- There’s no call-out fee for the assessment
- You get a fixed quote before any work starts
For most Illawarra homes upgrading from a standard electric storage system, the rebate-adjusted cost of a heat pump installation is competitive with replacing like-for-like — while delivering significantly lower running costs for the life of the system.
