What to Do If You Smell Gas in Your Wollongong Home

The NSW Government advises treating any gas leak as a potential lethal risk. If you smell gas in your home, follow these steps in this order:

• Leave the building straight away, call 000 and ask for Fire and Rescue NSW.
• If it is safe to do so, turn off the gas at the gas meter or the gas cylinder.
• Turn off all appliances, including electrical ones, and any pilot lights.
• Open doors and windows for ventilation, but only if it is safe to do so.
• Put out any naked flames and cigarettes.
• Contact a licensed gas fitter, and contact your gas supplier on the phone number printed on your gas bill.

Gas Fitting Rules in NSW That Homeowners Should Know

Gas work in NSW is regulated by Building Commission NSW.

• A licence is needed for any gas work. In NSW, a person needs a licence or certificate to do any gasfitting work, whatever the cost of the work and whether the property is residential, commercial or industrial. Gasfitting work includes installing, altering, extending or repairing a gas installation, and connecting or disconnecting a gas appliance. You can check a gas fitter’s licence details online or by calling 13 27 00 before any work begins.
• You receive a certificate after the gas work is finished. After any work involving gas, the licensed gas fitter must give you a certificate of compliance for natural gas, or a certificate of inspection for bottled gas. The certificate confirms that a licensed gas fitter completed the work to the relevant industry standards, and it must show the gas fitter’s name and licence number.
• The certificate is lodged within five business days. For an installation connected to the gas network, the gas fitter must test the installation for defects and submit a certificate of compliance to Building Commission NSW within five business days. For a bottled gas installation, the gas fitter must inspect the cylinders, regulators and appliances, test the whole installation, attach a compliance plate and give the owner a certificate of inspection. Since 1 March 2026, these certificates are lodged through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal, which sends a copy to the customer automatically.
• Gas appliances must be certified. All gas appliances sold in NSW must be tested, certified and labelled, and each appliance is marked with the type of gas it is built to use. A gas fitter may only install certified appliances and products.

Gas Safety in Rental Properties in the Illawarra

If you rent out a property with gas appliances, NSW Fair Trading guidance says the landlord is responsible for repairs and maintenance of gas connections and appliances such as gas heaters, stoves and ovens. Landlords should make sure that bathroom and kitchen heaters have clear ventilation, that heater flue pipes are free of blockages and holes, and that there are no soot deposits or discolouration on or around a heater or its flue.

Tenants should make sure gas appliances are serviced regularly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Where the manufacturer does not list an approved service agent, NSW Fair Trading recommends a licensed gas fitter. Gas Heater Servicing and Carbon Monoxide

Gas that does not burn completely produces carbon monoxide, which is why a gas heater needs to be installed correctly and serviced. NSW Health lists headaches, nausea, vomiting and dizziness as symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure, and long exposure can cause unconsciousness and death.

To reduce the risk, make sure the heater and the gas supply are certified, properly installed and regularly serviced, keep the room well ventilated, and turn the heater off when you leave the house. Natural Gas and LPG in Wollongong Homes

Some Illawarra homes are connected to mains natural gas, and others run on LPG from gas bottles or a bulk tank. The difference matters, because every gas appliance is marked with the type of gas it is built for, and you should know which supply your home has before you buy a new appliance.
The two gases also behave differently when they leak. Natural gas is lighter than air and rises, while LPG is heavier than air and sinks to low areas such as floors, gullies and basements.
