Can You Smell Gas? Know What to Do.

If you can smell gas inside or around your home, turn off the gas supply at the meter, open doors and windows, avoid flicking any switches, get everyone outside, and call your gas supplier’s emergency line or 000. Once the immediate situation is safe, call us on 0416 101 022 — we’ll get to you the same day to find and fix the problem.

Not every gas issue announces itself with a smell. Pilot lights that won’t stay lit, appliances that burn with a yellow or orange flame instead of blue, soot marks around a heater, or a gas bill that’s climbed without explanation — these are all signs something isn’t right. Gas work isn’t something to put off or attempt yourself. It requires a licensed gas fitter, and in NSW, it’s the law.

CS Plumbing holds NSW Contractor Licence 39901C and has been carrying out gas fitting work across Wollongong and the Illawarra for over 35 years. Whether you need an appliance installed, a gas leak tracked down, or a compliance certificate for a property you’re selling or leasing, we handle it properly, safely, and to code. There’s no call-out fee.

Our Gas Fitting Services Include:

  • Gas Appliance Installation & Commissioning – We install and test all major gas appliances, including ovens, cooktops, heaters, BBQs, hot water systems, ensuring safe, correct, and code-compliant operation.
  • New Gas Line Installation & Extensions – Need a new gas connection or an extension to your current setup? We design and install gas infrastructure for residential and commercial sites, ensuring flow rate and pressure compliance.
  • Gas Leak Detection & Repairs – Smell gas or suspect a leak? Our team responds fast, using advanced detection tools to locate leaks and make the system safe—then repairs or replaces faulty lines immediately.
  • Gas Hot Water System Installations – We supply and install gas storage and instantaneous systems for homes and commercial premises. We help you choose the most efficient and suitable unit for your usage needs.
  • Gas Bayonet Fittings & Outdoor Connections – Want a gas point for your BBQ or patio heater? We install bayonets and outdoor-rated gas outlets for hassle-free entertaining or alfresco dining setups.
  • Commercial Gas Systems & Compliance Upgrades – We work with cafes, restaurants, laundromats, and schools to ensure all gas infrastructure is compliant, efficient, and meets NSW Fair Trading regulations.
  • Gas Compliance Certification (CCGW) – All gas installation and repair work is completed by licensed technicians and accompanied by a Certificate of Compliance for Gas Work, that is required for council approvals, insurance, and resale.

NSW Gas Fitting Compliance — What You Need to Know

Gas fitting in NSW is heavily regulated, and for good reason. Here’s what matters for homeowners and landlords in plain terms.

Only a licensed gas fitter can touch gas work. Every gas installation, disconnection, repair, and alteration in NSW must be carried out by a tradesperson who holds the appropriate licence. At CS Plumbing, our work is covered under NSW Contractor Licence 39901C. If someone offers to do gas work without being able to show you their licence number, walk away.

A compliance certificate must be issued after every job. After completing gas fitting work, your gas fitter is legally required to issue a gas compliance certificate and submit a copy to the relevant network operator. This certificate is your proof that the work was done to standard. Keep it — you may need it if you sell or lease the property.

Landlords have specific obligations. If you lease a property in the Illawarra with gas appliances, you have a duty of care to ensure those appliances are safe and the gas installation is compliant. Regular inspections by a licensed gas fitter are strongly recommended, and a compliance certificate should be current before a new tenancy begins.

Appliances must be serviced regularly. Gas heaters, especially older open-flue models, should be professionally serviced at least every two years. Carbon monoxide from a poorly maintained or faulty gas heater is colourless and odourless — you can’t detect it without the right equipment. If you have an open-flue gas heater more than 10 years old, we’d recommend getting it checked sooner rather than later.

Natural Gas vs. LPG — What’s Available in Your Illawarra Suburb

Not every part of the Illawarra has mains natural gas. Most of suburban Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Figtree, Unanderra, Dapto, and parts of Shellharbour and Albion Park are connected to the Jemena network. Suburbs further out — including parts of the escarpment, Albion Park Rail, Mount Pleasant, Thirroul, Bulli, and the northern Illawarra — typically rely on LPG bottles or a bulk tank.

The distinction matters because natural gas and LPG appliances are not interchangeable. Each fuel type operates at a different pressure, so appliances must be correctly jetted for your supply. Running an appliance on the wrong gas without conversion is dangerous and non-compliant.

Not sure which you have? A meter box with underground pipework at the front of your property means mains natural gas. Bottles or a bulk tank means LPG. We work with both across the Illawarra and can advise on the right setup for your home.

Gas Fitter FAQS

A healthy gas flame burns blue with a crisp, defined shape. If you’re seeing yellow or orange flames, the pilot light keeps going out, there’s soot or black marks around the appliance, or you notice a strange smell when it’s running, it needs attention from a licensed gas fitter. Even without visible symptoms, gas heaters should be serviced every two years and cooktops and hot water systems checked periodically — especially in coastal Illawarra suburbs where salt air can accelerate corrosion on fittings and connections.

While there’s no single statewide law that mandates a gas certificate specifically at the point of sale, having a current gas compliance certificate demonstrates that your gas installation is safe and up to code. Conveyancers and buyers increasingly request it, and if any gas work has been done on the property, a certificate should already exist for that work. If you’re unsure of the status of your gas installation, we can inspect it, carry out any necessary repairs, and issue a certificate — which gives both you and the buyer peace of mind.

You can physically place the appliance, but the gas connection itself — including fitting the bayonet or flexible hose, checking for leaks, and verifying correct pressure — must be done by a licensed gas fitter. It’s a legal requirement in NSW, and it’s there because even a small error in a gas connection can create a serious safety hazard. We’re happy to do the full job or just handle the connection and sign-off if you’ve already positioned the unit.

The appliances look the same, but they’re calibrated differently. Natural gas and LPG operate at different pressures and have different energy densities, so the jets (orifices) inside the appliance are sized for one fuel type. Most quality appliances can be converted between the two, but it requires swapping the jets and adjusting the regulator — a job for a licensed gas fitter. Running an appliance on the wrong gas type without conversion is dangerous, inefficient, and will void your warranty.

It depends on the distance from your gas meter, the route the pipe needs to take, and whether we’re working with accessible spaces or need to run through walls and floors. A short run to a cooktop in an existing kitchen is a different job to piping gas out to a new alfresco area on the other side of the house. We’ll assess the route, calculate the pipe sizing to ensure adequate pressure and flow, and give you a fixed quote before we start. No call-out fee, no surprises.
