Chemical Safety Showers And Eye Wash Stations Installed

Where hazardous substances, chemicals, or airborne contaminants are present in the workplace, emergency safety showers and eyewash stations are a legal requirement, not optional equipment. In NSW, both the installation and the plumbing connections must be carried out by a licensed plumber.

CS Plumbing Services installs safety showers and eyewash stations for commercial and industrial facilities across Wollongong and the Illawarra. We handle the plumbing: the water supply connections, pipework, drainage, and temperature control, installed to meet AS 4775 (Emergency Eyewash and Safety Shower Equipment) and NSW WHS requirements.

With over 35 years of trade experience and Contractor Licence 39901C issued by NSW Fair Trading, we work with site managers, facility managers, builders, and WHS teams to get installations completed correctly and ready for inspection.

Who Needs Safety Showers and Eyewash Stations?

Any workplace where employees may be exposed to hazardous substances is required under NSW WHS legislation to provide emergency decontamination equipment. This applies across a wide range of industries and facility types:

  • Industrial and manufacturing facilities: Chemical handling, processing plants, and production lines
  • Laboratories and pharmaceutical environments: Including research, testing, and compounding facilities
  • Construction and civil sites: Where hazardous materials or contaminants are in use
  • Warehouses and logistics sites: Particularly where chemicals are stored or handled
  • Food production and beverage facilities: Cleaning agents and processing chemicals
  • Agricultural and veterinary operations: Pesticides, fertilisers, and disinfectants
  • Commercial workshops and trade facilities: Paint shops, panel beaters, automotive workshops

If your workplace requires a safety shower or eyewash station under your WHS obligations or as a condition of your development approval, we can carry out the plumbing installation to bring you into compliance.

Our Safety Shower & Eyewash Installation Services

Safety Shower Installation

We install the plumbing for both plumbed and combination safety shower units, including:

  • Cold and tempered water supply pipework to the shower unit
  • Thermostatic mixing valves where temperature-controlled water is required to prevent scalding or thermal shock
  • Correct flow rate and pressure delivery to meet AS 4775 requirements
  • Drainage connections from the shower area
  • Wall, floor, or freestanding mounting as required by the site layout

Installations are positioned to meet the access, clearance, and response-time requirements set out in AS 4775 — within 10 seconds travel from the hazard.

Eyewash Station Installation

We install plumbed eyewash and eye/face wash stations including:

  • Dedicated water supply lines to the eyewash unit
  • Push-plate, foot-operated, or hands-free activation plumbing
  • Tempered water supply where required
  • Drainage connections
  • Combination units integrating eyewash with safety shower plumbing

Upgrades and Relocations

If your existing safety shower or eyewash station is in the wrong location, lacks a tempered water supply, or was installed without proper drainage, we can assess the existing plumbing and carry out the upgrade or relocation works needed to bring the installation into compliance.

AS 4775 and NSW WHS Compliance — What the Plumbing Must Meet

Under AS 4775, safety showers and eyewash stations must deliver:

  • A minimum flow rate of 76 litres per minute for safety showers
  • A minimum flow rate of 1.5 litres per minute for eyewash stations
  • Tepid water (between 16°C and 38°C) where practicable, to encourage adequate flushing time
  • Unobstructed access within 10 seconds travel from the hazard
  • Hands-free or stay-open operation for a minimum 15-minute flush

We install the plumbing to support these requirements. Your WHS officer or safety consultant is responsible for the overall compliance assessment, signage, and ongoing testing program — we focus on making sure the plumbing delivers what the standard requires.

Working with Builders and Project Managers

For new builds, fit-outs, and DA-condition works, we work alongside your builder, project manager, or hydraulic consultant to get safety shower and eyewash plumbing completed as part of the broader construction program. We can work from a hydraulic specification or assess the site and recommend an installation layout that meets AS 4775 access requirements.

Wollongong and the Illawarra

We install safety showers and eyewash stations for commercial and industrial facilities across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Dapto, Kiama, Albion Park, Port Kembla, Figtree, and the broader Illawarra region.

Safety Wash Station FAQS

Yes. The water supply pipework, drainage connections, thermostatic mixing valves, and flow requirements all fall under licensed plumbing work in NSW. The unit itself may be supplied by the client or through us — contact us to discuss your project.

A safety shower delivers a high-volume drench of water over the whole body for decontamination after chemical exposure. An eyewash station delivers a controlled, lower-pressure flow directed at the eyes and face. Many installations combine both in a single unit. AS 4775 sets the flow rate and performance requirements for each.

AS 4775 requires tepid water (16–38°C) where practicable to encourage a full 15-minute flush. In practice, this means a thermostatic mixing valve on the supply is often required — particularly for indoor installations where mains cold water may be too cold in winter or too warm in summer. We assess this as part of the installation.

Yes. If your current safety shower or eyewash station lacks proper drainage, doesn’t have a tempered water supply, or is in the wrong location relative to the hazard, we can assess the existing plumbing and carry out the necessary upgrade works.

Self-contained units don’t require plumbing connections and can be positioned and maintained without a plumber. If a plumbed installation is required or preferable for your site, that’s our scope. Talk to us and we can advise on what’s appropriate for your facility.
