COMMON CAUSES IN THE ILLAWARRA

The Illawarra’s landscape creates specific drainage challenges that homeowners across the region deal with regularly.

• Tree roots : Large fig trees, eucalypts and Norfolk pines are common across Wollongong’s older suburbs. Their root systems seek out moisture in pipe joins, especially in clay and earthenware pipes found in homes built before the 1990s.
• Heavy rainfall : The Illawarra escarpment creates some of the highest rainfall events in NSW. Stormwater drains block fast during heavy downpours, especially when leaf litter and silt wash in from the escarpment.
• Ageing pipes : Many homes in established suburbs like Figtree, Keiraville, Mangerton and West Wollongong still have the original clay drainage pipes. After 40+ years, joints fail, pipes crack, and roots move in.
• Grease and household waste : Kitchen drains clogged with grease and so-called flushable wipes are one of the most common callouts we get. The wipes don’t break down and they catch on pipe imperfections.

• CCTV drain camera : We feed a camera into the pipe to see the blockage and the pipe condition. You see the footage with us.
• Hydro jetter : High-pressure water clears tree roots, grease and debris.
• Pipe locator : Pinpoints the exact location and depth of the blockage above ground so we only dig where needed.
• Pipe relining : For cracked pipes that are still holding shape, we can line them from the inside without excavation.
